On successful completion of the whole apprenticeship standard, learners will be recognised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) at ‘Engineering Technician’ (Eng Tech) level.
As a Marine Engineering apprentice, you will get first-hand experience designing and producing layout solutions for a variety of marine craft. You will understand how to read technical drawings, and ensure you understand the intricacies of how each craft operates. You might be marking out materials for an area of a boat, or understanding more about the furnishings, heating and lighting required on each vessel.
Either way, no two days are the same in this profession.
Our Personal Tutors will deliver high-quality face-to-face learning and coaching and provide all the resources you will need to progress quickly. Our intuitive learner management system ‘Bud’ will really bring the subject to life through interactive learning tools, access to complementary online resources and relevant social communities, as well as provide real-time information so that you will always know where you’re at in your learner journey.

As a Marine Engineer, you have practical and technical skills, problem-solving ability, a high level of numeracy and teamworking and leadership skills. This allows you to ensure that engines and systems work efficiently and develop and deal with new and emerging technology. There are diverse employment opportunities such as shipyards, boatyards and marinas, merchant navies, defence navies, such as the Royal Navy, the offshore oil and gas industries and mineral extracting companies, classification, and inspection such as Lloyds Register. Marine engineering skills are so diverse and encompassing that they can be adapted to other types of engineering allowing greater career prospects in the future.
