Who is the apprenticeship for?

What will you learn?

This apprenticeship has been designed to give you all the technical skills and knowledge you will need to work on all the systems found within a huge range of cars and vans, ranging from replacing simple parts to complex fault diagnostics.

You will learn how to develop deep technical and diagnostic competence in response to the increasing complexity of vehicle technologies. You will develop sophisticated customer service behaviours, how to self-motivate yourself and others to contribute to the commercial success of your garage/depot.

How will you learn?

Our Personal Tutors will deliver high-quality face-to-face learning and coaching and provide all the resources you will need to progress quickly. Our intuitive learner management system ‘Bud’ will really bring the subject to life through interactive learning tools, access to complementary online resources and relevant social communities, as well as provide real-time information so that you will always know where you’re at in your learner journey.

This apprenticeship will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours in the following areas:

Knowledge

  • Routine servicing and inspection procedures
  • Steering and suspension geometries
  • electrical circuit requirements and calculations
  • Construction and operation of vehicle components and systems
  • Common fault types, causes and effects of different types of faults
  • Procedures for the maintenance of tools and the workshop
  • Vehicle emissions and legal requirements

Skills

  • Maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop
  • Minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures

Becoming a qualified Light Vehicle Technician is a skill for life and can open doors to a long and rewarding career. You’ll most likely work in a variety of areas, for example, independent garages, workshops, dealerships and specialist repair shops, and throughout your career could generate enough experience to own your own garage.

Do I have to find a job first?

If you’re not currently employed or looking for a new job, you can apply for apprenticeship vacancies advertised by employers looking to employ an apprentice, as you must be employed to undertake an apprenticeship.

If you already have a job and wish to gain a qualification in that industry as an apprentice, this is possible subject to your employer’s agreement.

Will it cost me anything?

No. Your employer pays your wage and we apply for government funding from the Education and Skills Funding Agency to support the cost of your qualification.
Currently 100% funding is available for apprentices ages 16 – 18 and 90% for those aged 19 + (subject to the employers levy status).

Can I undertake an Apprenticeship with my current employer?
