This apprenticeship has been designed to meet the professional standards of the relevant professional bodies of the Engineering Council led by organisations from the industry including Arriva Plc, Isuzu Truck (UK) Limited, Iveco Ltd, London General Services Ltd, Man Truck and Bus Ltd, Mercedes-Benz UK Ltd, Nottingham Scania (Great Britain) Ltd, Stagecoach Group Plc, Volvo Group UK and People 1st.

It is an excellent way to start your career in this industry.

What will you learn?

As a Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Technician (Heavy Vehicle) you learn how to be capable of servicing and repairing heavy goods vehicles and vehicles with a gross weight of over 3500kg.

This apprenticeship is designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need to work on the systems found within a huge range of heavy good and service vehicles, ranging from replacing simple parts to complex fault diagnostics.

How will you learn?

Our Personal Tutors will deliver high-quality face-to-face learning and coaching and provide all the resources you will need to progress quickly. Our intuitive learner management system ‘Bud’ will really bring the subject to life through interactive learning tools, access to complementary online resources and relevant social communities, as well as provide real-time information so that you will always know where you’re at in your learner journey.

This apprenticeship will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours in the following areas:

Knowledge

  • The fundamentals of HV technologies
  • The types and associated characteristics of HV and their configurations and applications
  • Diagnosing principles and logical problem solving techniques related to HV
  • How to service, inspect and maintain vehicles and trailers to the expected standards
  • The importance of safety inspection and maintenance schedules
  • Complex problem solving techniques

Skills

  • Basic tasks with tools and equipment used for basic mechanical and electrical procedures
  • Keep updated with emerging new technologies
  • Maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision

Do I have to find a job first?

If you’re not currently employed or looking for a new job, you can apply for apprenticeship vacancies advertised by employers looking to employ an apprentice, as you must be employed to undertake an apprenticeship.

If you already have a job and wish to gain a qualification in that industry as an apprentice, this is possible subject to your employer’s agreement.

Will it cost me anything?

No. Your employer pays your wage and we apply for government funding from the Education and Skills Funding Agency to support the cost of your qualification.
Currently 100% funding is available for apprentices ages 16 – 18 and 90% for those aged 19 + (subject to the employers levy status).

Can I undertake an Apprenticeship with my current employer?
