16 Oct How to start your career in the Hospitality industry
There are many good reasons to get into the hospitality industry, but how do you start a career in the hospitality sector?
Taking an Apprenticeship is an excellent way to enter the Hospitality sector because you get structured training, gain a qualification and of course, earn a salary.
Different roles within this sector offer plenty of opportunities to utilise your skills. You’ll need to enjoy working with people, be energetic, and be committed to delivering excellent service. You could be working in a restaurant, bar, café, pub, hotel, holiday resort, conference centre or even on a cruise ship.
So why work in the Hospitality sector in the first place?
You may have heard that a career in the Hospitality Industry is fun and exciting. You’re correct! It’s increasingly common for students to work while they complete their studies, and a job in Hospitality often fits around their school life allowing them to work in the evenings or at weekends. But did you realise there’s a world of opportunities and a range of qualifications available beyond that entry-level position?
As humans, we will always need to eat, drink, and sleep. Because of this, there will always be vacancies available if you’re out of work. You could make use of the enormous scope of jobs and gain as much experience as you can in different places of work. Or, stay with the same employer for a few years! Where else could you get that sort of variety and reassurance that a place of work was always out there for you?
Employers who are looking for people to work for them in Hospitality aren’t going to hire people who aren’t bright and friendly toward their customers. Therefore, the people you are working with all day will be some of the most vibrant, lively and fun people you’ll ever meet! Working in an environment like this means it never gets boring.
It Creates Opportunities all over the World
Since every country in the world has a Hospitality industry, all the skills you learn are readily transferable to use anywhere which is unlike almost any other sector. Meaning that a career in this sector can lead you all over the world, discovering new countries, new culture, and new people. As well as getting a job in Hospitality in a foreign country, there are also opportunities to work on cruise liners and other means of travel where someone with the skills in Hospitality are utilised.
Brighten people’s days and gain social skills
The Hospitality sector is extremely social. No matter what role you’re working in, every time you come into work you’re making someone’s day that little bit better. The sector that you work in is all about the customer’s face-to-face experience. It’s not about computer programmes or spreadsheets, it’s about making people happy. Since you’re interacting with so many people face-to-face on a daily basis your social skills will grow to be outstanding and you’ll gain an abundance of confidence that you may have never had before. You’ll perfect the art of small talk, and you’ll meet people from all over the world that will provide you with a great amount of cultural insight.
Flexible Working Hours
If you’re looking for something different from the typical 9-5 hours, a career in Hospitality is the right choice for you. Hospitality workers are busy round the clock. Depending on their field, client needs, and their own personal preferences they may end up working night shifts and day shifts. This flexibility is perfect if you’re a working parent, or simply looking for a way to achieve your optimal work-life balance.
