05 Apr How can an Apprenticeship in Hair and Beauty kick-start a creative and flexible career?
3 Minute Read
Taking an Apprenticeship is an excellent way to enter the Hair and Beauty sector because you get structured training, gain a qualification and of course, earn a salary!
Apprenticeships also open opportunities for the future. Thanks to the in-depth, off-site training that they provide, many Apprentices go on to excel in their chosen sector although they do not restrict you from moving sector. Higher-level Apprenticeships can even lead to a qualification comparable to a university degree! Also, since you are spending time in the workplace as part of your Apprenticeship, you naturally develop ‘soft skills’, like communication and teamwork. You can only adopt these skills by being in a working environment, they’re all transferrable to any career path you may take.
One of the biggest reasons for the growth in popularity of Apprenticeships is that they are debt-free. Apprenticeship training is co-funded by the government and the employer and the learner/Apprentice does not pay course fees (subject to eligibility). Another advantage is that from day one, Apprentices are on the frontline, working and learning practical skills that they’ll use throughout their careers. Also, on an Apprenticeship, a learner will finish their placement with professional and vocational qualifications that are ‘job-role’ and industry-specific. You’ll also be able to learn new skills and work to pay the bills all in one go, you’ll earn whilst you learn.
Why start a career in Hair and Beauty
The Hair and Beauty sector is extremely social. Every time you come into work you’re making someone’s day that little bit better. The sector that you work in is all about the customer’s face-to-face experience. It’s not about computer programmes or spreadsheets, it’s about making people happy. Since you’re interacting with so many people face-to-face on a daily basis your social skills will grow to be outstanding and you’ll gain an abundance of confidence that you may have never had before. You’ll perfect the art of small talk, and you’ll get a nice group of regulars!
Once qualified, the opportunities where to take your skills are endless! There’s the option to take your skills to a higher level, continue at your trained level in a salon as an employee, or even go self-employed! There aren’t many sectors that offer that level of creative freedom and flexibility.

His thirst for learning and hard work not only gained him new cutting and colouring techniques, but also his maths and English qualifications – something he wasn’t sure he could do at the outset.
Mikaela began her NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing straight from school, attending a local college with day release to a local salon. Once she successfully completed her Level 2, she was employed as a full-time stylist at a salon in Winchester. “I had always wanted to do hairdressing, it appealed to me that I could do a job where someone can instantly feel good about themselves by changing their look. It’s a really rewarding job.”
