Who is the apprenticeship for?

This apprenticeship is ideal for employees looking to become Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technicians (Heavy Vehicle) capable of servicing and repairing heavy goods vehicles and vehicles with a gross weight of over 3500kg. It is suitable for those working in either a dealership, for a manufacturer or for an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles.

What will they learn?

This apprenticeship has been designed to give your employees all the technical skills and knowledge they need to work on all the systems found within a huge range of heavy goods vehicles, ranging from replacing simple parts to complex fault diagnostics.

Your employees will learn how to:

  • Develop deep technical and diagnostic competence in response to the increasing complexity of vehicle technologies
  • Develop sophisticated customer service behaviours
  • Motivate themselves and others to contribute to the commercial success of your company

How will they learn?

Our Personal Tutors will deliver high-quality face-to-face learning and coaching and provide all the resources your employee will need to progress quickly. Our intuitive learner management system ‘Bud’ will really bring the subject to life through interactive learning tools, access to complementary online resources and relevant social communities, as well as provide real-time learner information so that you will always know what your employee is learning and how they are progressing.

This apprenticeship will develop your employees’ knowledge, skills and behaviours in the following areas:

Knowledge

  • The fundamentals of HV technologies
  • The types and associated characteristics of HV and their configurations and applications
  • Diagnosing principles and logical problem solving techniques related to HV
  • How to service, inspect and maintain vehicles and trailers to the expected standards
  • The importance of safety inspection and maintenance schedules
  • Complex problem solving techniques

Skills

  • Basic tasks with tools and equipment used for basic mechanical and electrical procedures
  • Keep updated with emerging new technologies
  • Maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision
