Kris admits that he used to think that apprenticeships weren’t for people like him. “I used to think apprenticeships were for school-leavers rather than experienced staff.”
Kris has had an extensive career in retail and is jointly responsible for a team of 52 customer service colleagues. His ambition is to progress to be a duty manager and his manager suggested an apprenticeship would be a good way to help him achieve that. “I’ve been on the course, which is a Level 3, for a year now and I’m on target to complete in October.”
The biggest challenge he says has been time management, “doing the day job but leaving myself enough time to make sure I don’t fall behind on the apprenticeship. But my manager has been excellent and has made sure I slot time in for study, and my Personal Tutor at Paragon Skills has been very supportive. She’s very knowledgeable, she knows what she is talking about.”
The most positive part for him was the learning itself and learning new skills. “Although I had quite a lot of experience, it was quite nice to have a recap and a refresh of certain areas of management.”
Kris is already talking to his manager about doing the next level.
