Technology: it rules our lives, it’s all around us. It’s a massive industry and offers thousands of career opportunities every year.

Covering sectors such as engineering, aerospace, electronics, graphics and design and metallurgy, the Technology Industry is truly vast, and is always looking for high calibre recruits to take advantage of its Apprenticeship opportunities.

Within the industry, you will often find the term “engineer”. This covers anyone involved in the design, production and maintenance of anything from aircraft to cooling systems, and items of equipment used in almost every other type of industry.

If you have a good eye for detail and a genuine interest in how things work; and if you are methodical and enjoy working with your hands, then a career within technology could be for you.

Technology Apprenticeships are available in the following sectors:

  • Performing Engineering Operations
  • Industrial Applications
  • Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Servicing
  • Technical Services
  • Engineering Maintenance
  • Fabrication and Welding
  • Aeronautical Engineering

What will I learn?

You will be required to pass an aptitude test and have a reasonable ability in maths, science and English.

The component parts of your Apprenticeship will depend upon the sector in which you wish to work.

You will undertake Initial Engineering Training, (IET), which is designed to equip you with basic engineering skills, knowledge and understanding. You will learn about:

  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Underpinning knowledge of all aspects of engineering

You will also be able to practice your newly learnt skills at the engineering workshops.

You will be able to achieve an NVQ at Level 2 in the sector you have chosen.

You will also gain:

  • A Technical Certificate, gained through taught off the job training sessions
  • Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology at Level 1
  • Key Skills in Working with Others and Improve own Learning at Level 2
  • You will receive training in Health and Safety and how the law applies to you at work

How will I be trained?

Your training will take place within your company workplace and you will be required to undertake an Advanced Technical Certificate at a training centre on a day release basis. We will visit you in your workplace to assess your evidence/ portfolio of work and we will provide ongoing support.

What about the future?

A Technology Apprenticeship provides the best possible preparation to achieving trained operator/technician status in the industry. It may also provide progression to:

An Advanced Apprenticeship that will enable you to achieve an NVQ Level 3. You will develop more advanced craft skills and be prepared for future progression to supervisory or junior management roles.

From here it is possible for you to achieve a HNC or HND, or progress to higher level NVQs or a degree.
