Care work can be demanding, challenging and very worthwhile. Those who work in this sector have to be more highly trained and professional than ever before.
Jobs in care can be based in either a residential home, a day centre or increasingly, peoples own homes. You could be working with either elderley people, people with disabilities or learning difficulties. Care work can involve working shifts or weekends.
If you are a good communicator, can use your own initiative and have a genuine interest in helping people, then a career in Care could be for you.
A Health and Social Care Apprenticeship will give you a wide range of skills and knowledge that are needed to work in the Care industry today.
What will I learn?
You will need excellent communication skills and a friendly and outgoing personality.
Acceptance on to the programme is subject to an initial assessment and interview. You will receive an extended induction that will provide you with initial training and work experience.
Your Apprenticeship will enable you to achieve an NVQ at Level 2 in Health and Social Care, gaining skills in areas such as:
- Hygiene
- Health and Safety
- First Aid
- Patient Handling.
You will also gain:
- A Technical Certificate
- Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number
- You will also receive training in how the law applies to you at work.
An Advanced Apprenticeship will enable you to achieve an NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care. You will work on more advanced skills such as:
- Helping with clinical activities
- Team leading
- Contributing to the assessment of an individual’s needs
- Providing continued support.
How will I be trained?
Most of your training will be in your workplace with your employer and you will attend training sessions at a training centre on a regular basis. We will observe you at work where you will carry out most of your assessments, and we will support you with assignments and discussions.
What about the future?
As Care is a fast growing sector, your Apprenticeship will give you a solid foundation on which to build your career. It may also provide progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship, which would prepare you for future supervisory or management posts, or provide an entry route to undertake a Diploma or Degree in Nursing.
