Paragon Skills for Industry, a leading provider of apprenticeship training, has seen a surge in the number of apprentices applying to embark on careers in the marine industry. The company is currently seeing 10 apprentices apply for every available place on its marine apprenticeships, which offer learners the chance to work with leading companies including Sunseeker International, the RNLI and Berthon Boat Company.
John Graham, Director of Marine Engineering at Paragon Skills, said: “The marine industry is worth over a staggering £3 billion and relies on the quality calibre of its current and future skilled employees. Apprenticeships offer direct access to highly motivated young people and its fantastic news for us, employers and the industry that we’ve seen such an increase in applicants.”
Paragon Skills offers a number of apprenticeship schemes, including boat building, electrical and marine engineering. The company currently has over 200 full-time marine apprentices and over 124 young apprentices aged at 14-16 enrolled on courses. This will grow to over 260 full-time apprentices by July 2009.
The company is committed to its marine apprenticeships and works closely with employers to respond to their needs. It also works closely with the British Marine Federation to ensure the course framework continues to meet industry requirements, works for the industry, and that it provides the necessary skills required by employers.
Sarah Dhanda, Director of Training Services at the BMF, said: “The Marine apprenticeship framework is well-used within the sector, both for the larger powerboat builders as well as smaller boat builders and yards. The framework is currently under review and the BMF are working closely with Paragon Skills to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the leisure marine industry.”
